You are likely to be familiar with the identity
 \cos( \alpha )  +  \cos( \beta )  = 2 \cos( \frac{ \alpha  +  \beta }{2} )  \cos(  \frac{ \alpha  -  \beta }{2} )
and the fact that
 \cos( -  \alpha )  =  \cos( \alpha )
