Figure 1

a) Figure 1 is diagram for series and parallel

Resistance in Series :

V = V1 + V2 + V3 .......

By Ohm's Law

V = IR

which implies

IR = IR1 + IR2 + IR3 ........

I(R) = I ( R1+R2+R3........)

R = R1 + R2 + R3........

Resistance in Parallel :

I = I1 + I2 + I3 .......

By Ohm's Law

I = V/R

Which implies

V/R = V/R1 + V/R2 + V/R3........

V(1/R) = V(1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3........)

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3........

b) Minimum Resistance( Resistance in

in parallel)

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3........

1/R = 1/12 + 1/ 12

1/R = 2/12 = 1/6

R = 6 ohm.

By Ohm's Law

V = IR

3 = I X 6

I = 0.5 A

Maximum Resistance( Resistance in

in series)

R = R1+ R2+R3........

R = 12 +12

R = 24 ohm.

By Ohm's Law

V = IR

3 = I X 24

I = 0.125

Ratio of Power = P1/P2

= VI( in parallel )/ VI ( in series )

= I( in parallel )/ I ( in series )

= 0.5 / 0.125

= 4 : 1

The Ratio of their powers are 4:1.
