Answer

I. x^2+2xy-y^2

II. 5a+b-6

For (I) let's say,

"B should be added to A to obtain C." (A+B=C)

We want B.

  • A=x^2+xy+y^2
  • B is not known
  • C=2x^2+3xy

B=C-A

\Longleftrightarrow B=(2x^2+3xy)-(x^2+xy+y^2)

\Longleftrightarrow B=x^2+2xy-y^2

So our answer is x^2+2xy-y^2.

For (II) let's say,

"B should be subtracted from A to get C." (A-B=C)

We want B.

  • A=2a+8b+10
  • B is not known
  • C=-3a+7b+16

B=A-C

\Longleftrightarrow B=(2a+8b+10)-(-3a+7b+16)

\Longleftrightarrow B=5a+b-6

So our answer is 5a+b-6.

Hope this helps.
