Coal in thermal power plant :

Major electricity is derived from only thermal power plant where heat energy is getting converted into electricity, as water is getting heated to form a steam which will drive a generator, in whole process we need coal but as its not environmental free we are using another way that's Hydroelectric power plant which is based on flow of water and big turbines are used to develop it, mostly based on dams.

Uranium :

This is mostly used in nuclear power plant which will be used in nuclear reactor in nuclear fission it will evolve high amount of energy which can be used as electricity by converting same.
