Here's a quick summary on what refraction is:

Light travels in different speeds in different mediums. This is because of the molecular packing of the matter. Light also travels in vaccum and the speed in vaccum is different from any other medium

Hence when the medium changes, so does the speed of light in that medium changes. Now light instead of taking the actual path it's supposed to take, there is a change in it's direction and this phenomenon is known as refraction of light.
