Explanation:

In this process , generally a cheaper metal is coated with a metal with a higher cost and that with the chemical effect of electric current. In this , the anode ( positive terminal ) is the metal which is to be coated and the cathode ( negative terminal ) is the material on which the material is to be coated , and there is also a condition that the electrolyte and the anode should be of the same metal . Firstly , the metal from the electrolyte dissociates and forms a layer on the cathode and then to fill the gap created in the elctrolyte , the metal from the anode reacts with the non metal and forms its own salt and dissolves in water . Again it breaks down and and moves towards cathode and forms a layer on it and then the gap created is filled by the metal on the anode and hence , the cycle continues .
