1. As the key K is Opened, so, there is no Potential Difference across ADB circuit and consequently no current flowing through the circuit.

Equivalent Resistance,R = 4+4= 8 ohms.

Current in ACB, I = V/R = 12/8 = 3/2 = 1.5 Amperes.

=================================

2. R1 and R2 are in Series...

R12 = 4 + 4 = 8 ohms

R3 and R4 are in Parallel....

R34 = (4*4)/(4+4) = 2 ohms

Total Resistance, R = 8 + 2 = 10 ohms

As, I = V/R
=> I = 12/10 = 1.2 A
Therefore, I = 1.2 A

So, the current is 1.2 Amperes.

Gatha3: But why in ADB there would not be any potential difference
Gurbrahm: bcoz key is present in ABD.
Gurbrahm: Moreover, ACB and ADB are connected in parallel...
Gurbrahm: so if we open the key and break the circuit of ADB then also it will not affect ACB because it is connected in parallel and gets the same amount of voltage..
Gurbrahm: i hope you got it !
Gurbrahm: :-)

when key is open

no current flow through the part ADB

therefore,resistance=R1+R2

=4+4 = 8 ohms

by ohms law

v=ir

12=i×8

I=1.5 ohms

when key is closed

current flow through the part ADB

therefore,1/resistance=1/R1+1/R2

1/resistance=1/4+1/4=1/2 ohms

overall resistance=resistance 1 + resistance 2

=2+2=4 ohms

by ohms law

v=ir

12=i×4

I=3 ohms
