it can not directly processed by the CPU it must first copied into primary storage ie. Ram

that is why it is called secondary memory

Hardisk, pen drive cannot be processed directly by CPU. First it should be copied into RAM(Random Access Memory) and then it can be processed effectively.so they are called as secondary memory.
