so the median will be the average of [n/2]th and [n/2+1]th observation

∴56/2=28 and 56/2+1= 29

so its the 28th and 29th observation

then finding the cummulative frequency which would be adding all the frequencies from above  eg 12 , 12+3, 12+3+7 and so on [this would form another table called the cf]

so depending on the observation we got find the nearest cf and move across to the weights and corresponding to the nearest cf  

after doing so add both weights and divide by 2

since our observations r 28 and 29 ... the nearest cf would be 28 and 38  

the weights corresponding to 28 and 38 are 50 and 51

median =[50+51]/2=101/2

=5.5
