One story that inspired me from the vedas was that of Shibi Rana. He was the most generous and compassionate king.
Once a pigeon approaches the king to save him from an eagle. Shibi offers his protection to the pigeon and soon an eagle follows. The eagle argues effectively that devouring a pigeon is but the natural behaviour of an eagle as part of food chain, so the king proposes to give the eagle anything he wants in exchange of the pigeon. The eagle asks for the flesh cut from his right side, equal to the pigeon's weight.
A weighing scale is brought. The king cuts out parts of his right side - thigh, calf, arm.. But the pigeon is still heavier!!! The king is surprised but continues. The eagle notices a tear drop under the king's left eye!! And orders him to stop !!!
"I don't want a gift that's not given happily"
The great Shibi Rana replies - "The left eye weeps because it is not allowed to help the right side to save the pigeon's life!"
The pigeon and the eagle reveal that they are gods who came to test him!
They make him whole again and bless him..
