a) Preparation of soil
↪ Preparation of soil is the first step before growing of crop. It helps to turn the soil and loosen it to allow the roots to penetrate deep into it. The loosening of the soil helps in the growth of several soil microbes, earthworms etc., which enrich the soil with humus and other essential nutrients. The process of turning and loosening is called ploughing. This is done using a plough, hoe and cultivators.
b) Sowing
↪ Sowing is another important step in crop production. It is the process of placing the seed in or on the soil for future growth. The seeds that are selected for growing should be of good quality. This will improve the net yield of the crop. Sowing is usually done with the help of either a traditional tool or a seed drill. The traditional tool is shaped like a funnel. It was used earlier for sowing seeds. Nowadays, seed drills that make the use of tractors are used for sowing seeds. This tool disperses seeds uniformly and sows seeds at proper depth. Sowing by this method saves time and also protects the seeds from birds.
c) Threshing
↪ Threshing is the process of loosening the edible part of grain (or other crop) from the husks and straw to which it is attached. It is the step in grain preparation after reaping and before winnowing, which separates the grain from the chaff.
d) Weeding
↪ Weeding is a gardening practice in which the weeds or unwanted plants are removed either by hand picking or by grinding with the gardening machine. The weeds are wild plants which grows in between the ornamental plants in the garden or in between the agricultural crops. These weeds acquire large amount of resources like water, minerals from the soil and depletes these resources available for the growth of wanted or desired plants. Therefore, these plants are required to be removed by weeding.

Preparation of soil
Answer: The first step of cultivation is preparation of soil. This is done by loosening and turning. A plough is used for this purpose. If the soil becomes too hard then farmer may resort to watering the soil before ploughing. Traditionally, animal-drawn ploughs have been used by farmers. Now-a-days, tractor-drawn ploughs are used for this purpose. A tractor helps in saving time and labour.
Sowing
Answer: Seeds are sown in the field after ploughing. A farmer needs to separate damaged seeds from good seeds. The seeds should be sown at proper gaps and at proper depth. Proper gap between seeds and proper depth in soil ensures adequate sunlight, moisture, air and nutrients to the growing plants.
Weeding
Answer: Removal of weeds is called weeding. Weeding is usually done manually or by using a trowel. Weeds are also removed during ploughing. Weedicides are the chemicals which destroy weeds. 2, 4 – D is an example of weedicide. Weedicides are sprayed before flowering and seeding in weeds. A farmer needs to take precautions to prevent any harm from weedicide.
Threshing
Answer: Separation of grains from harvested crop is called threshing. Threshing is done by threshing machine or by cattle. Cattle are tied in a series around a pole. Harvested crop is spread around the pole. Animals are made to trample the harvested crop. It helps in separating the grains from the harvested crop.
