White light has the longer wavelength because yellow is a part of white light. White light has wavelength from 400mm to 700mm.

Red and orange cannot be seen much clearly in a fog. Yellow is obtained by removing the blue to violet components from white light. It is much brighter than red and yellow and tungsten bulbs produce a yellowish-white sort of color. So yellow is more suitable for headlights as it will be easier for drivers to see yellow.
