In order to know the trick, let us assume a three digit number first.

A third digit number is of the form:

100x + 10y + z

Where, x , y and z are hundreds, tens and ones digit respectively.

Follow the steps as given in the question:

1. Add 7 to the number

100x + 10y + z + 7

2. Double the number

⇒ 2(100x + 10y + z + 7)

200x + 20y + 2z + 14

3. Subtract 4 from the number

⇒ 200x + 20y + 2 + 14 - 4

200x + 20y + 2z + 10

4. Divide the number by 2

⇒ (200x + 20y + 2z + 10) / 2

⇒ 2(100x + 10y + z + 5) / 2

100x + 10y + z + 5

5. Subtract the original number from it.

⇒ 100x + 10y + z + 5 - (100x + 10y + z)

⇒ 100x + 10y + z + 5 - 100x - 10y - z

Hence, The trick is true and 100% works.

Example :-

Let a third digit number be 123

According to the steps we have:

Steps :-

1. Add 7 to the number

⇒ 123 + 7

130

2. Double the number

⇒ 130 × 2

260

3. Subtract 4 from the number

⇒ 260 - 4

256

4. Divide the number by 2

⇒ 256 ÷ 2

128

5. Subtract original number and we must have 5 left.

⇒ 128 - 123
