Rainfall made so acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm, chiefly to forests and lakes. The main cause is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels, the waste gases from which contain sulphur and nitrogen oxides which combine with atmospheric water to form acids.

Sulphur is present in coal as an impurity. So , when coal is burnt in homes , factories or in power plants , sulphur dioxide is given off . Sulphur dioxide is poisonous . It combines with the oxygen in the air to form sulphur trioxide . This reacts with the water in the clouds to form sulphuric acid . Rain mixed with sulphuric acid is called acid rain .

Acid rain affects our lungs . It damages buildings and corodes metal structures . It also reduces the fertility of the soil by making the soil acidic . Acid rain along causes harm to plants.
