1. In the following questions we are actually supposed to subtract the numbers but the method asked to use is to add the additive inverse of the second number.

a) 35-(20) = 35+(additive inverse of 20)
= 35+(-20)
= 35-20 = 15.

b) 72-(90) = 72 + (-90) = 72-90 = -18.

c) (-15)-(-18) = -15 + 18 = 3.

d) (-20)-(13) = -20 + (-13) = -20-13 = -33.

e) 22-(-12) = 22 + (12) = 32.

f) (-32)-(-40) = -32 + (40) = 8.
