Hearing the very same word Punishment, just bother the people about asking what the offence is and who has done the offence? Punishment involves the deliberate infliction of suffering or actual offender for an offence such as a moral or legal transgression. Since punishment involves inflicting a pain or deprivation similar to that which the perpetrator of a crime inflicts on his victims. So we can say that where ever there is a mistake, there is a punishment for that. Sometimes, when the punishment is severe as the offence is gruesome and require immediate action but sometimes it don’t. Hence depending upon the offences and mistake, the punishment is given legally and morally.

To an extent the old saying is true that “spare the rod and spoil the child” as punishment has been used as a corrective measure since ages. Be the convents of the West or ashrams of the East, teachers around the world have been using the punishment as a corrective measure. The growing indiscipline in schools and colleges has become a great problem now-a-days. Should we use the rod? Easier said than done.

We are living in the modern world. Punishment as a corrective measure won’t work at all. It is inhuman and insulting. Physical punishment crushes the initiative and innocence in a child. In schools and colleges such measures are counter-productive. They discourage healthy relationship between teachers and students. Their relationship should be based on mutual love and respect.

But human society is not a society of angels. Some kind of punishment may be necessary. It may not physical one. The erring and indiscipline students should be fined heavily. No doubt, the parents will have to suffer for misdeeds of their wards. But there is no other alternative deterrent. Irregular students should be detained and not allowed to appear in the examinations. They should be given other types of punishments which can increase their moral and make them better human like forcing them to go and teach the lower class students and often t o cleaning of various important building sites like churches, temples etc. Teachers should serve as a role-model for their students so that they can see and learn the lessons directly from them rather than going astray like a rudderless ship in the society.Hearing the very same word Punishment, just bother the people about asking what the offence is and who has done the offence?
