If you are said to write electric configuration of an element which has 24 e-( atomic number), most probably that would be {2,8,8,6}.

It gives a rough idea about position of that element.

As you know there are 2 elements in 1st period, 8 - 8 elements in 2nd & 3rd period, that must be out of this range by 24 - 2 - 8 - 8 = 6.

As 4th period contains more than 6 elements, required element must be in 4th group.

Based on observation, you can easily guess that the element is at 6th position from starting of 4th period.

So it is in 4th period & in 6th group.

Period = 4

Group = 6

d Block

Explanation:

We can know the position of any element in periodic tabe just by knowing it atomic no. and writing electronic configuration.

The highest no. in configuration show the period of element.

If We get s sub sell and d sub shell in last then the sum of there electron will show the group of element.
