Answer:

On 4 August 1789, three weeks after the 14 July Storming of the Bastille, France’s National Constituent Assembly started passing the August Decrees. These were up to 19 decrees which were worked on through 11 August, and which essentially abolished the feudal system by removing the various rights and privileges of the nobility and clergy. Initially the King used his right of suspensive veto to block implementation of these decrees as well as the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. A month later, during the Women’s Bread Riot and March on Versailles on 5 October, Lafayette prodded the King to approve the Declaration of the Rights of Man. After his removal from Versailles to Paris the next day, 6 October, the King was pressured into approving the August Decrees. Working out the details of the August Decrees became a primary objective of the Assembly for the next two years.
