Answer:

1) The applications of Archimedes' principle are: (i) Archimedes' principle is used in designing ships and submarines. (ii) Lactometers based on Archimedes' principle are used to measure purity of a sample of milk. (iii) Hydrometers used to measure density of liquids are based on Archimedes' principle.

2) When the stone is immersed in water a buoyant force is exerted by the water onto the stone. Since the force of weight(mg) is downward and buoyant force is upward therefore these are added and the resultant force is mg-B; where B is the buoyant force.

ANSWER

Given, mass of substance, m=50g;

volume, V=20cm

3

; density, ρ=?

The density of substance given is

d=

V

m

=

20cm

3

50g

=2.5gcm

−3

Hence the density of the substance is greater than the density of water. Hence the weight acting downwards Vdg is greater than the buoyant force acting upwards Vρ

water

g.

Hence the substance will sink in water.
