lavinia believed that john had started a love affair with helen,not noing that helen was a ghost. he makes this statement to make her understand that affair was nt as cheap as tat but somthing superior becoz deir realtionship is a kind of a bond where helen promises help only if he wuld duscourage people from usin the quija board
