a.

 {983}^{2}  -  {17}^{2}

Its is in the form

 \blue{  \boxed{{a}^{2}  -  {b}^{2}  = (a + b)(a - b)}}

 \implies  {983}^{2}   -  {17}^{2}  = (983  + 17)(983 - 17)

 \implies (1000)(966)

 \orange{  \boxed{\therefore  {983}^{2}   -  {17}^{2}  = 966000}}

b.

 {(2x + 5)}^{2}

Its in the form of

 \blue{ \boxed{(a + b)^{2}  =  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  + 2(a)(b)}}

 \implies  {(2x)}^{2}  +  {5}^{2}  + 2(2x)(5)

 \implies 4 {x}^{2}   + 20x + 25

Using quadratic formula

 \blue{ \boxed{x =  \frac{ - b± \sqrt{ {b}^{2}  - 4ac} }{2a} }}

Here,

  • a=4
  • b=20
  • c=25

 \implies x =  \frac{ - 20± \sqrt{ {20}^{2}  - 4(4)(25)} }{2(4)}

 \implies  x =  \frac{ - 20± \sqrt{ 400  - 400} }{8}

 \implies x =  \frac{ - 20}{8}

 \orange{  \boxed{\therefore x =  \frac{ - 5}{2} }}

HOPE THAT HELPS!!

Answer:

a) (a^2- b^2) = ( a+b) ( a-b)

983^2- 17^2 = ( 983+17) ( 983-17)

= 1000 *966

= 966000

b) ( a+b)^2 = a^2+2ab+b^2

(2x+5)^2=(2x)^2+2*2x*5+(5)^2

=4x^2+20x+25

Step-by-step explanation:
