2) Speaking-
When we mention basic communication skills, most people first think of speaking. There are a huge range of skills and abilities that fall under this basic category. They range from having a large vocabulary to using voice tone effectively to using descriptions and story to enhance your expressions.

WRITING-This category will include all written verbal communication skills. So written letters, signs, stories, plays, screenplays, novels and much more are accounted for. But it also includes graphics of any kind. Logos, icons, drawings, pictures and so on all help us express ourselves in ways that do not involve speaking.

Understanding and listening-  Different people refer to this category in different ways. But the most common names used for it are “understanding” and “listening.” In any event, what people are referring to is the ability to comprehend someone else’s non-written communication. This includes not only knowing what the words they utter mean, but factoring in how their non-verbal communication and their particular personal and social characteristics shed light on that meaning.

Reading-  This is the ability to make sense of written communications of any kind. It involves not only recognizing the words, but being able to extract their meaning so as to attain comprehension. It could also be applied to the ability to appreciate and analyze graphical artistic works such as those mentioned under the category of “Writing.”

3)  We use verbal communication to inform, whether it is to inform others of our needs or to impart knowledge. Clarification is a key component of verbal communication. Often, we do not articulate ourselves clearly, or our words or actions are misconstrued. Verbal communication helps to clarify misunderstandings and provides missing information.

4)Tushar- Hello, Bimal, what brings you here?

Bimal- I’ve come to receive mejda. He’s coming from Bombay.Tushar- does he live there now?Bimal- Yes, he was transferred there a year ago. He’s coming on leave.Tushar- Does he live there alone?Bimal- No, sister-in-law is with him.Tushar- Then she too is coming?Bimal- Of course. He has got a month’s leave and so she too is coming. Now, what are you here for?Tushar- I too have come to receive my sister and brother-in-law who are coming from Delhi Mail.Bimal- is the train running to time?Tushar- No, it’s running late by an hour.
Bimal- Trains are often late now-a-days.Tushar- That puts us into great inconvenience. We hurry up to the station only to wait for a long time. It’s really tedious.Bimal- We can’t help. Surely there must be some just cause for this delay.Tushar- I don’t know.Bimal- I’m lucky enough. My train is running to time. Oh! The signal is down.Tushar- Lo! There comes the train.Bimal- come along, Tushar, I’ll introduce you to my sister-in-law._____________________________________________________________5)  Which communication skill is most important: listening, writing, or speaking?  Given the nearly non-stop use of email and social media in every aspect of your life you might respond immediately with “written communications”.  Given a few more moments to think about it, you might choose “spoken communications” over writing.  You spend a lot of time engaged in conversations on your mobile or face-to-face.  But in both cases you’re off the mark.  While writing and speaking effectively are important skills to employ daily in your life, they aren’t the most important when it comes to communicating.  That spot is reserved for listening.

The importance of listening is likely something you’ve heard before.  If it wasn’t our parents scolding us for not listening, then it was Epictetus’ famous quote reminding us, “Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak”.   Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of communication in the average persons life, pointing out that most people spend up to 80 percent of their waking hours involved in some method of communication.  This is further broken down to about 25 percent writing and reading, 30 percent speaking, and 45 percent listening.  Not surprisingly, numerous studies also show that we are horrible listeners.  Not good.
