(a) Bcoz once the thread breaks the force metre received backward push which may hurt Sam. Also that when you pull a thread, which is pretty thin, acts high force on ur hand and may cause cuts.
(b) The weight of different threads differ but it is not possible to measure such a small amount of force. Another reason is that I think the 'force metre' they used is actually a 'spring balance'(not sure about the 2nd reason).
