PLZ explain the line " He coloured deeply under his sunburn, then grew pale.." what is coloured deeply..?? URGENT!!!!

This line meas that when he had a direct exposure with the sun, then due to the intensity of heat his color of the skin turned dark or might be it changed into red. Standing for a long time under the sun without umbrella causes sunburn which eventually makes the complexion dark.

The narrator was simply astonished to see the boys work yet they spent their money so meagerly so he wanted to know what those boys did of all the money they earned. When he asked Nicola about this, he grew pale of embarrassment.
