plz explain this process. I don't understand why magnesium is oxidised to give Mg2+ in preference of iron . becoz iron is loosing e- for oxidation. then how Mg give Mg2+.

Iron is losing electrons and magnesium is gaining it...

it is because chemical reactivity of Mg is much more than that of Fe ,,so therefor when both of them are present,,it is Magnesium and not Fe which will get Oxidised,,,and hence Iron is protected
