Upward movement of water and minerals in the xylem depends upon transpiration. So, it's always unidirectional. Phloem transport depends on source - sink relationship. Therefore, the movement of phloem sap is bi directional.

So to ensure that the materials do not flow down again the movement in xylem is unidirectional .
