habeas corpus means 'to have a body' .By issuing such a writ, the court can get the body of any person released if it has been unlawfully captured by any person or a group of persons or by the state .the writ is thus a great safeguard for the personal freedom of a citizen.

hope this helps you...

Answer:

A writ of habeas corpus (which literally means to "produce the body") is a court order  or a law demanding that a public official (such as a warden) deliver an imprisoned individual to the court and show a valid reason for that person's detention.
