POP = CaSO4.1/2H2O
Gypsum = CaSO4.2H2O
The water of crystallisation of POP is 1/2, while water of crystallisation of Gypsum is 2, i.e. a molecule of POP contains 1/2 molecules of water and a molecule of Gypsum contains 2 molecules of water.
Preparation of POP :-
CaSO4.2H2O (gypsum) ---∆(393K)-----> CaSO4.1/2H2O + 1½H2O
Uses of POP :-
1) It is used for making plaster to cast over broken bones.
2) In dentistry.
Preparation of Gypsum :-
CaSO4.1/2H2O (POP) + 1½H2O -----> CaSO4.2H2O
Hope this helps........
