Question

When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (called brine), it decomposes to form chemical 'X' . The solution of 'X' on heating with few pieces of granulated zinc metal gives chemical 'Y' and 'Z' gas is evolved.

(i) Identify the chemicals X , Y and Z.

(ii) Also write both the equations involved in this entire process.

Answer

When electricity is passed through aqueous solution of sodium chloride  (called brine) then , it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide , Hydrogen gas and Chlorine gas.

Word equation is as follows :

\red{\sf{sodium\:chloride\;\xrightarrow{electricity}\;Sodium\;hdroxide\;+\;}}\\\red{\sf{\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;hydrogen\;+\;Chlorine}}

Chemical equation is as follows :

\red{\sf{NaCl_{(aq)}\xrightarrow{electricity} NaOH_{(aq)} + H_{2(g)} + Cl_{2(g)}}}

So, we can conclude that Chemical 'X' is NaOH (sodium hydroxide) .

Now,

On treating Sodium hydroxide with zinc granules a compound Sodium zincate and hydrogen gas is formed.

Word equation will be :

\red{\sf{sodium\:hydroxide\xrightarrow{\;\;\Delta\;\;}Sodium\:zincate+hydrogen}}

Chemical equation will be :

\red{\sf{NaOH_{(aq)}+Zn_{(s)}\xrightarrow{\;\;\Delta\;\;} Na_2ZnO_{2(aq)} + H_{2(g)}}}

So, we could easily conclude that Chemical 'Y'is sodium zincate (Na₂ZnO₂)  and gas 'Z' is hydrogen (H₂) .
