Dwarfness is considered as a desirable character in case of cereals. The dwarf plants do not need to spend energy for growth and development as in case of tall plants. The energy of the plant is used for the production of a large number of seeds or grains with more amount of nutrients.

A with animals, plants can be dwarfed through genetic engineering and selective breeding, but can also undergo natural, morphological changes to acclimatize to environmental stresses such as soil quality, light, drought, flood, cold, infection, and herbivory resulting in a dwarfed stature.
