the vertex is the point on the graph, where the parabola changes direction. or basically the tip of the parabola.  the lowest value of f(x) can be 2, when the x=1

f(x) = (1-1)^2 + 2

f(x) = 0+ 2 = 2

axis of symmetry is verticle line that divides he parabola into asymmetrical parts. that in this case is x=1

using completing the square you can convert  f(x) = x^2 -8x +7 into vertex form

x^2 - 2X4Xx + 4^2 - 4^2 + 7

f(x) = (x-4)^2  -9

similarly,  the lowest value of f(x) can be -9, when the x=4

vertex (4,-9)

to find more points on the graph you can find the roots and y-intercept

(x-4)^2 -9 = 0

x-4 = \sqrt{9}

x= 4+3 or 4-3

x = 7, 1

solutions (7,0) (1,0)

y-intercept

x^2 - 8x + 7 = f(x)

0^2- 8(0) + 7 = f(x)
