fraction of distance covered by train = 3/8

fraction of distance covered by taxi = 2/5

fraction of distance covered by walking is

1 - ( \frac{3}{8} + \frac{2}{5} ) \\ \\ = 1 - \frac{3}{8} - \frac{2}{5}

 = \frac{1 \times 40 - 3 \times 5 - 2 \times 8}{40} \\ \\ = \frac{40 - 15 - 16}{40}

 = \frac{9}{40}

He walked = 3 1/2 km = 7/2 km

So 9/40 fraction of total journey = 7/2 km

then total journey will be
 \frac{7}{2} \div \frac{9}{40} \\ \\ = \frac{7}{2} \times \frac{40}{9} = \frac{140}{9} \: km

Distance covered by taxi will be
 \frac{140}{9} \times \frac{2}{5} = \frac{56}{9} \: km = 6 \frac{2}{9} \: km

Distance covered by taxi is 6 2/9 km

Let the total journey distance be 'x'.

Distance covered by train = (3x/8).

Distance covered by Taxi = (2x/5).

Now,

Journey covered in train and taxi:

= > (3x/8 + 2x/5)

= > (15x + 16x)/30

= > 31x/40.

Given that he walks the rest of the distance. He walks 7/2 km.

= > x - (31x/40) = 7/2

= > (40x - 31x)/40 = (7/2)

= > 9x/40 = (7/2)

= > 18x = 280

= > x = 280/18

= > x = 140/9.

Hence,

Distance covered by taxi = (2/5) * (140/9)

= > 56/9

= > 6 2/9 km.

Hope this helps!
