Given x + y = 7/2

On squaring both sides, we get

(x + y)^2 = (7/2)^2

x^2 + y^2 + 2xy = 49/4

x^2 + y^2 + 2(5/2) = 49/4

x^2 + y^2 + 5 = 49/4

x^2 + y^2 = 49/4 - 5

x^2 + y^2 = 49 - 20/4

x^2 + y^2 = 29/4  ------------ (1)

We know that (a - b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab.

Now,

(i)  (x - y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 - 2xy

              = 29/4 - 2(5/2)

              = 29/4 - 5

              = 9/4

x - y = 3/2

(ii) x^2 - y^2 = (x + y)(x - y)

                     = (7/2) * (3/2)

                     = 21/4.

x^2 - y^2 = 21/4.

Hope this helps!
