So, votes polled by winning candidate:

⇒ (100 - 43)% of x = 57% of x

Now,

⇒ 57% of x - 43% of x = 9800

⇒ 14% of x = 9800

⇒ (14/100) * x = 9800

⇒ 14x = 980000

⇒ x = 70000.

(a) The number of votes polled = 70000.

(b) The number of votes winning candidate got:

⇒ 57% of 70000

⇒ (57/100) * 70000

⇒ 5700.
