Youngsters' brains can become used to the flashing screens and rapid-fire editing of video games and television, making it harder for them to concentrate in the classroom where there is less visual stimulation.

The pace of television shows has increased dramatically since the 1980s, and the brain has become used to quick-fire edits and fast-moving images, according to Associate Professor of Psychology Douglas Gentile.

Glued to the screen: Children who spend hours every day playing video games could find it harder to concentrate at school (posed)

This has made it harder for brains to be gripped by quieter pursuits – including paying attention at school.

'If we train the brain to require constant stimulation and constant flickering lights, changes in sound and camera angle, or immediate feedback, such as video games can provide, then when the child lands in the classroom where the teacher doesn't have a £1 million -pound-per-episode budget, it may be hard to get children to sustain their attention,' Prof Gentile said.

Researchers asked 1,323 children between the ages of seven and ten, helped by their parents, to record their video game and television habits over 13 months.

Their teachers recorded any attention problems shown by the children over the same time period.

A group of 210 university students also took part in the study.

Researchers concluded that TV and computer games had an identical effect on children.

They also found that attention problems could arise after just one year of spending more than two hours a day in front of a screen.

'ADHD is a medical condition, but it's a brain condition. We know that the brain adapts and changes based on the environmental stimuli to which it is exposed repeatedly,’ Prof Gentile said.

'Therefore, it is not unreasonable to believe that environmental stimuli can increase the risk for a medical condition like ADHD in the same way that environmental stimuli, like cigarettes, can increase the risk for cancer.'

The study noted that television and video game time is not exclusively responsible for the development of ADHD and other attention problems. WRITE ONLY OF BLACK LETTER
