Given that

No. of students passed in English = 50

No. of students passed in Maths = 60

No. of students passed in both = 40

or Maths intersection English

Now as we know that Total students

= Maths union English

= No. of element in mathematics + No. of element in English - No. of element common in both

= 60 + 50 - 40

= 110 - 40

= 70

So there are 70 students
