You can graph the inequalities. Red is |x-2| and Blue is |x+2|

Then you can easily see the equation for each part of the line. Each inequality has 2 line equations either side of their "kink". The domain you are concerned with x²\leq2 is the same as -\sqrt{2} \leq x \leq \sqrt{2} (the pink line)

Adding the two inequalities in this range will always give the value 4.
