Not sure if you learned about strata levels but they basically just mean 'layers'. In your diagram, you can see different layers called A, B, C, and D. These are strata layers. Relative dating is essentially used to determine if something is older or younger than another. For example, from your diagram, it can be implied that D is older than C, C is older than B, and so on; A being the youngest of them all. In other words, the higher the strata, the younger it is. Putting this into context, if you know that material A was from 1990 and material C was from 1970, you can estimate that material B existed sometime between 1971 - 1989.
