let x and y be odd positive integers.

we know that odd positive interfere are of the form 2m + 1.

therefore,

let x be of the form 2m + 1 and y be of the form 2n + 1

now,

X² + Y²

= ( 2m+ 1)² h (2n+ 1)²

= 4m² +1 + 4m + 4n² + 1 + 4n

= 4m² + 4n² + 4m +4n + 2

since this number is divisible by 2 it is even

however it is not divisible by 4

Hence proved.
