Squaring both sides :

(a +  \frac{1}{a} ) {}^{2}  = (3) {}^{2}  \\ a {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{a {}^{2} }  + 2( \frac{1}{a} )(a) = 9 \\ a {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{a {}^{2} }  + 2 = 9 \\ a {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{a {}^{2} }  = 9 - 2 \\ a {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{a {}^{2} }  = 7
