Explanation:

Average speed = total distance / total time

Let half distance = d , then total is 2d. Time taken to cover first half is T1 and T2 is the time for second half.

V1 = d/T1

T1 = d/V1

similarly T2 = d/V2

Speed Average = (d + d)/(d/v1 + d/v2)

= 2d/{(dv2+dv1)/(v1 . v2)}

final answer = 2v1.v2 /(v2+v1)

Average velocity is same as nothing is mentioned about the direction so the assumed direction is just straight line.
