Answer:

Hope this helps you.

(i) The "maximum number of defective bulbs" is 8-10.  Only 1 box contained this many.

(ii) For the mean, we don't know exactly how many defective bulbs are in each box.  We only have ranges, so use the midpoint as an approximation.

So for the calculation, say there are 3 boxes with 1 defective bulb, then 4 boxes with 3 defective bulbs, 5 boxes with 5, and so on.

Then

mean = ( # sum of all numbers of defective bulbs ) / ( # boxes observed )

= ( 3×1 + 4×3 + 5×5 + 3×7 + 1×9 ) / 16

= 70 / 16

= 4.375

(iii)  P( 2-4 defective bulbs )

= ( # boxes with 2-4 defective bulbs ) / ( # boxes )

= 4 / 16

= 1 / 4

= 0.25

(iv) P( highest number of defective bulbs )

= P( 8-10 defective bulbs )

= ( # boxes with 8-10 defective bulbs ) / ( # boxes )

= 1 / 16

= 0.0625
