Given polynomial is x^3 - 4x^2 + x - 6.

x^2 + 2x - 3)x^3 - 4x^2 + x - 6(x - 6

                   x^3 + 2x^2 - 3x

                  --------------------------

                           -6x^2 + 4x - 6

                           -6x^2 - 12x + 18

                  ----------------------------

                                       16x - 24.

Here remainder is 16x - 24.

Therefore 16x - 24 must be added to x^3 - 4x^2 + x - 6, so that the result is exactly divisible by x^2 + 2x - 3.

Hope this helps!
