in case of concave lens
v is always negative
in case of convex lens
v is positive when (u>f)
v is negative when (u<f)
u refers image distance and f refers to focal length
hope it helps u

'V' is always negative for concave lens and either positive or negative for convex lens.
- For a concave lens, the focal length (f) is always negative since it is diverging lens. The image in the concave lens is always formed on the left side of the lens. When an object is placed at an infinite distance from a concave lens it forms an image at focus.
- For a convex lens, the focal length is always positive as it is converging lens. But depending on the object length (u), the sign convention of convex lens varies.
- If the object is placed in front of lens, then the object distance is negative. If real image is formed on right side the image distance (u>f) is positive. However if virtual image is formed on left side of lens (u<f) then image is negative.
