Explanation:

Here,  \: f = -30 cm \: ,  \: u = -40 cm

Image  \: distance  \: can \:  be \:  calculated  \: as \:  follows :

 \frac{1}{v}  +  \frac{1}{u}  =  \frac{1}{f}

 \frac{1}{v}  -  \frac{1}{40}  =   - \frac{1}{30}

 \frac{1}{v}  =  -  \frac{1}{30}  +  \frac{1}{40}

 =  \frac{ - 4 + 3}{120}  =   - \frac{1}{120}

v =  - 120cm

image \: distance \: (v) \: 120cm

 \red{Find  the  magnification  as  well.}

Magnification  \: can  \: be \:  calculated  \: as \:  follows :

m =  \frac{v}{u}  =  \frac{ - 120}{ - 40}  = 3

The positive sign with magnification show that image is real.
