Hey Mate!

Let the total distance travellled be x

Average Speed =Total Distance /Total Time

( Case 1 ) 3 m/s = x/3 / t 1

t 1 = x / 3 / 3 = x/9

Remaining; 2x/3, half of it = 2x/6

( Case 2 ) 4 m/s = 2x/6 / t 2
t 2 = 2x/6 / 4 = 2x/ 24 = x/12

( Case 3 ) 5 m/s = 2x/6 / t 3
t 3 = 2x/6 / 5 = 2x/ 30 = x/15

Average Speed = x / ( x /9 + x /12 + x / 15 )
= x / (20x + 15x + 12x ) / 180
= x / 47x × 180
= 3.82 m/s; option ( C )
