Question :

Solve the following simultaneous equations -

( x + y )/xy = 3 & ( x - y )/xy = 1 .

Solution :

( x + y )/xy = 3

=> x + y = 3xy ........ (1)

( x - y)/xy = 1

=> x - y = xy ....... (2)

Adding (1) and (2)

=> x + y + x - y = 3xy + xy

=> 2x = 4xy

For x ≠ 0 ,

4y = 2

=> y = 2/4 = ½ .

Substituting y = ½

x + ½ = 3 x • ½

=> ( 2x + 1 )/2 = 3x/2

=> 2x + 1 = 3x

=> x = 1 .

Solution :

( x, y ) = ( 1 , ½ ) is the required solution set .
