See attachment 1 for diagram

  • We can see that the diagram is made up of 4 semi circles of diameter 10 cm

See attachment 2 for a clearer diagram (Half the diagram)

  • We can see that the unshaded area is made up by the area of the square not covered by the two semicircle.
  • Therefore to find the total shaded area (4 semi circle), we will find this area and then multiply by 2

Find area of the square:

Area = Length x Length

Area = 10 x 10 = 100 cm²

Find the radius:

Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

Radius = 10 ÷ 2 = 5 cm

Find the area of two semi-circles:

Area of two semi-circles = 2 x (1/2 πr²)

Area of two semi-circles = 2 x (1/2 π(5)²) = 25π cm²

Find the area not covered by 2 semi circles:

Area = 100 - 25π = 150/7 cm²

Find the area not covered by 4 semi circles:

Area = 150/7 x  2 = 300/7 = 42.86 cm²

Answer: 42.86 cm²
