Solution:

Let us find the work done by the ball first.

Given, ball is traveling with a velocity of 10 m/s after the compressed spring is released. We are aware that, Work Done = Change in Kinetic Energy.

Hence Work done by the Ball is equal to the Kinetic Energy of the moving ball. Kinetic energy of the moving ball is given as;

→ K.E. of one ball = 1/2 mv²

→ K.E. of one ball = 1/2 × 2 × 10²

→ K.E. of one ball = 100 J

Therefore Work Done by each ball is 100 J.

We know that, Energy can only be transferred from one form to another. In this case, the stored potential energy of the spring is transferred into kinetic energy of the ball. Hence we can write it as:

→ P.E. of Spring = K.E. of 2 balls

→ 1/2 kx² = 200 J

→ 1/2 × 4 × x² = 200 J

→ 2x² = 200 J

→ x² = 100 J

→ x = 10 m   [Including both the balls]

→ x = 5 m for each ball  [Compression Length]

According to third equation of motion, we can say that:

→ v² - u² = 2as

Here, 'v' is the final velocity of the ball, 'u' is the initial velocity of the ball, 'a' is the acceleration for each ball and 's' is the compression of the spring.

→ 10² - 0² = 2 ( a ) ( 5 )  [Acceleration for each ball]

→ 100 = 10a

→ a = 10 m/s²

Hence Acceleration for each ball would be 10 m/s² and combined acceleration would be 20 m/s².
