lets put 'a' as x and 1/a as b
(a + \frac{1}{a} ) ^{2} = (a) ^{2} + 2(a)( \frac{1}{a} ) + ( \frac{1}{a} )
(a + \frac{1}{a} ) {}^{2} = {a}^{2} + 2(a)( \frac{1}{a} ) + \frac{1}{ {a}^{2} }
given that
{a}^{2} + \frac{1}{a {}^{2} } = 23
therefore we will put the value in the above equation.
(a + \frac{1}{a} ) {}^{2} = 23 + 2
a + \frac{1}{a} = \sqrt{25}
a+1/a=5
